Observing Workers Memorial Day on April 28

Each year, the labor movement comes together on the anniversary of the passage of Occupational Safety and Health Act to honor the thousands of working people who die each year on the job. The COVID-19 pandemic, employer recklessness, and a strained healthcare system continue to threaten the lives of working people.

This April 28, consider attending a Workers Memorial Day event in your community. You can find the AFL-CIO's Workers Memorial Day toolkit, and more information about the day, here.

Employees at Nava PBC Secure Recognition of Their Union, the Largest in Civic Tech

Employees at Nava PBC Secure Recognition of Their Union, the Largest in Civic Tech

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 25, 2022) -- Staff at Nava PBC, a civic tech organization that builds government services, today secured voluntary recognition of their union, Nava United, with OPEIU Tech Workers Union Local 1010. They are now the largest union of workers in civic tech.

Employees at Nava requested voluntary recognition in February and have spent the interim weeks in negotiations with company leadership to define the scope of the bargaining unit. Nava’s leadership pushed back hard, following the lead of many tech companies, cutting out entire departments from the bargaining unit. Nava United fought for an inclusive bargaining unit that included technical and non-technical staff, and workers were able to include 12 colleagues who would have otherwise not been protected by the union.

Ukraine Relief Effort

If any local union or member is interested in making a donation to help the people of Ukraine, the AFL-CIO recommends the International Trade Union Confederation's (ITUC) Ukraine Fund.

https://petitions.ituc-csi.org/support-ukraine?lang=en

The ITUC’s Ukrainian member organizations FPU and KVPU are providing support to families who desperately need assistance with food and water provisions, medical supplies and hygiene items. You can help Ukraine’s workers and their families by donating to the ITUC’s emergency fundraising appeal. All funds donated will be passed on to their two member organizations to support their humanitarian work in Ukraine.

End the Violent Invasion of Ukraine

2 March 2022

End the Violent Invasion of Ukraine

The AFL-CIO condemns the violent invasion of Ukraine by the Russian military. We stand in solidarity with the workers and their families who are impacted by the devastation, and offer our condolences for lives that have been lost.

We join the global labor movement and our allies in calling for an immediate end to President Vladimir Putin’s military aggression and we support extensive economic sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, particularly those focused on Putin and his protectors. These sanctions should be strengthened, by excluding Russia from the SWIFT international banking system and by taking effective multilateral action against tax havens and financial secrecy laws that protect Putin and his enablers. We further call on all U.S.-based corporations doing business in Russia to publicly condemn Putin’s government while calling for an end to the attack on Ukraine. We stand ready to assist the Biden administration in its efforts to implement and strengthen these measures, and we call on global leaders to build toward re-establishing peace and democracy in Ukraine and the region.

Attention Nonprofit Employees: Public Service Loan Forgiveness Deadline is Oct. 31

The Oct. 31 deadline is fast approaching for public sector employees to apply for student loan relief through the U.S. Department of Education's Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.

Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

Take Advantage of Public Service Loan Forgiveness Changes Before Oct. 31

Many OPEIU members work for "public service employers," which includes many nonprofits, and are thus eligible to take advantage of temporary changes that make it easier to qualify for loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.

More specifically, under the temporary waiver:

  • Borrowers who have Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), Perkins loans or other federal student loans can consolidate their loans into a Direct Consolidation Loan and receive PSLF credit for periods of repayment prior to consolidation. Periods of repayment on parent PLUS loans are not eligible under the limited PSLF waiver. Before consolidating, borrowers should check to see if they work for a qualifying employer using the PSLF Help Tool.
  • Past periods of repayment will now count regardless of whether a borrower made a payment, or made that payment on time, for the full amount due, or on a qualifying repayment plan.

Be sure to check your eligibility for the PSLF waiver before the changes expire on Oct. 31, 2022.

Unfortunately, union staff are not eligible for this program. Be sure to visit the OPEIU Membership Benefits page to learn about the OPEIU Student Debt Reduction Program and the educational scholarships available for OPEIU members and their families.
