Shocked by Bristow's Unilateral Decision to Cut More Than 350 Good-Paying Jobs, Union Pilots and Mechanics Call on Company to Schedule Talks

New Iberia, La. – More than 150 helicopter pilots and mechanics represented by the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU) Locals 107 and 407 at Bristow Helicopters are shocked by the company’s unilateral decision, announced Wednesday afternoon, to close two Louisiana facilities in both New Iberia and Galliano, resulting in the loss of more than 350 good-paying, family-sustaining jobs.

In June, Bristow completed a merger with Era Group that brought together two workforces, the OPEIU pilots and mechanics at Bristow and nonunion pilots and mechanics at Era. OPEIU has initiated a process with the National Mediation Board for the union to represent a joint workforce of Era and Bristow pilots and mechanics.

Reject the McConnell proposal and pass the HEROES Act

29 July 2020

Reject the McConnell proposal and pass the HEROES Act

After months of sitting on his hands, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has finally released a proposal for COVID-19 relief. The package is called the HEALS Act, but unfortunately this poorly named bill will heal nothing and will only hurt working people and our families.

The relief package proposed by McConnell on July 27 is $2 trillion short and 73 days late. The bill drastically reduces the $600 in weekly unemployment benefits that thousands of America’s families are relying on right now. While the HEROES Act requires an emergency OSHA standard, McConnell’s proposal does nothing to keep workers safe and instead only protects corporations from liability. And during a time when millions of working people are without a job, health care or retirement security, the package also includes a bill from Sen. Mitt Romney that fast-tracks Social Security and Medicare cuts.

Please call your senator and tell them the McConnell bill is wrong for the country and that the HEROES Act is what we need

Upsides for Some Remote Workers; Lost Pay and Security for Others

Upsides for Some Remote Workers; Lost Pay and Security for Others

Working from home creates economic winners and losers. It can benefit highly skilled employees but depress others’ wages and make it hard to organize.

When the pandemic hit and tens of millions of American workers suddenly redeployed to their basements and living rooms, it was easy to imagine that their workdays would unfold roughly as before, with communication tools like Slack and Zoom substituting for face-to-face interactions (and maybe with slightly greater multitasking opportunities).

TELL YOUR SENATORS: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

TELL YOUR SENATORS: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Since May, the HEROES Act – which would provide relief to frontline workers and to working families amid the COVID-19 crisis – has sat untouched on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s desk. The protection of millions of retirees' and would-be retirees’ pension plans hangs in the balance as Sen. McConnell refuses to take up this important legislation, and endangers a lifetime of sacrifices from working people who deferred compensation in service of retirement security.

Sen. McConnell’s immoral strategy – to delay, obstruct and minimize relief for working families – must fail.

CALL YOUR SENATOR TODAY AND TELL THEM TO SUPPORT WORKING FAMILIES, PROTECT FRONTLINE WORKERS, SAFEGUARD PENSIONS, AND INVEST IN COMMUNITIES – NOT CORPORATIONS.

TELL YOUR SENATOR: Support the HEROES Act

H.R. 6800, the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act, includes an emergency workplace infectious disease standard; gives aid for state and local governments, public schools, the U.S. Postal Service, and pension funding relief; keeps workers on payrolls to avoid mass layoffs; extends unemployment insurance; provides more direct payments to working people; extends health care coverage; provides housing and food benefits; and much more. Working people are desperate for our leaders to put partisanship aside and do what is right for our health, our economy and our country. The HEROES Act is a major step forward.

Key Legislation Messaging and Local Union Communication Survey

To All OPEIU Local Unions:

It's a very busy time in Washington with several key pieces of legislation pending that will significantly impact working families, including the PRO Act and the For the People Act of 2021 (voting rights).

To ensure consistent messaging and combat anti-worker efforts, OPEIU has put together messaging points on both pieces of legislation, along with some graphics that all local unions are encouraged to use in any publications, websites, social media postings or other communication methods. They are included below, and graphics are attached. We've also included an AFL-CIO statement, “Senate Rules Cannot be Used to Block a Workers First Agenda," which we hope you’ll find helpful. The Executive Council’s full statement is available here.
